[Ethmoiditis with orbital complications in children]

Summary

This study analyzed five pediatric ethmoiditis cases with orbital complications. CT scans proved valuable for diagnosing ethmoiditis and guiding surgical treatment in these young patients.

Background:

Ethmoiditis, an inflammation of the ethmoid sinuses, can lead to serious orbital complications, particularly in children.
Prompt diagnosis and effective management are crucial for preventing vision-threatening sequelae.

Observation:

The study reviewed five pediatric cases of ethmoiditis with orbital involvement, all treated concurrently in Warsaw in October 1994.
The patients' ages ranged from 3.5 to 6 years.
Four out of the five cases required surgical intervention.

Findings:

Computed Tomography (CT) examinations were instrumental in accurately diagnosing ethmoiditis and its orbital extensions.
CT imaging facilitated the assessment of disease severity and aided in surgical planning.

Implications:

This case series highlights the importance of advanced imaging, specifically CT scans, in the timely diagnosis and management of pediatric ethmoiditis with orbital complications.
Early and accurate diagnosis through CT can lead to appropriate surgical intervention, potentially improving outcomes and reducing morbidity in affected children.
