[Harmfulness of obesity in children to their health]
Insights
Childhood obesity poses significant health risks, impacting blood sugar, IQ, thyroid function, and physical development. Early intervention is crucial to mitigate these adverse effects in affected children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Endocrinology
- Child Health Research
- Obesity Studies
Context:
- Rising rates of childhood obesity necessitate understanding its health implications.
- Obesity in children presents a growing public health concern.
- Comprehensive health assessments are vital for obese children.
Purpose:
- To investigate the detrimental health effects of obesity in children.
- To establish a baseline for developing effective obesity intervention strategies.
- To compare health markers between obese and normal-weight children.
Summary:
- Obese children exhibited elevated insulin and C-peptide levels.
- Lower thyroid function, total IQ, speech IQ, and operational IQ were observed in obese children.
- Obese children showed diminished cardiac and pulmonary function but earlier gonad development.
Impact:
- Identifies multiple health risk factors associated with childhood obesity.
- Highlights the need for targeted health monitoring and interventions for obese children.
- Provides data to inform public health policies regarding pediatric obesity.
Abstract:
With the increase of obese children, harmfulness of obesity to their health was studied to lay a basis for formulating corresponding intervention measures. Blood sugar, intelligent quotient (IQ), thyroid function, cardiac and pulmonary function, and index of gonad development were determined in 150 obese children and 150 normal healthy children. Results showed baseline secretion of insulin and C-polypeptide in obese children were significantly higher than that in controls, and thyroid function, total IQ, speech IQ and operation IQ all were relatively lower, cardiac and pulmonary function was significantly lower, and gonad development and maturity took place earlier in the former than in those in the latter. It indicated that there were a lot of risk factors harmful to their health in obese children.
