Abstract:
Biosyntheses of androgens and estrogens occur within the preovulatory follicle in the theca interna and granulosa cells, guided by gonadotropins, LH and FSH. The avascular granulosa cell layer is exposed to high concentrations of aromatizable androgen that reach it by diffusion from the theca interna. Estradiol is released into the bloodstream in greatest amounts as the follicle destined to ovulate completes its development in the late follicular phase.
