Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Genetics
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Non-secreting paragangliomas are rare tumors typically found in the head and neck region.
  • Familial paraganglioma syndromes, though uncommon, necessitate thorough genetic evaluation.

Observation:

  • An unusual case of familial paraganglioma manifested with cranial nerve palsies.
  • A vagal paraganglioma was identified after comprehensive diagnostic workup.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the vagal paraganglioma was performed.
  • A positive family history of paraganglioma, spanning one of five generations, was noted.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering familial links in paraganglioma diagnosis.
  • Effective management strategies for non-secreting paragangliomas, particularly those in the head and neck, are discussed.
