Summary

Incisional hernia is a common complication after aortic reconstructive surgery. Patients with aortic aneurysms face a higher risk of developing this complication compared to those with occlusive aortic disease.

Background:

  • Incisional hernia is a known complication following abdominal surgery.
  • Risk factors for incisional hernia after aortic reconstructive surgery require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if incisional hernia is a more frequent complication in patients undergoing aortic reconstructive surgery for aneurysmal disease versus occlusive disease.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patients who underwent aortic reconstructive surgery between 1988 and 1992.
  • Clinical examination of 87 out of 134 identified patients to assess for incisional hernia.

Main Results:

  • The overall incisional hernia rate was 28%.
  • Patients with aneurysmal aortic disease had a significantly higher incidence of incisional hernia after elective surgery compared to those with occlusive disease (p=0.04).
  • No significant association was found between incisional hernia and other factors like age, COPD, diabetes, smoking, wound infection, obesity, ICU stay, or blood transfusions.

Conclusions:

  • Incisional hernia is a significant complication of aortic reconstructive surgery.
  • Aneurysmal aortic disease is a key risk factor for developing incisional hernia post-surgery.
