Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the leading cause of adult mortality in Zimbabwe.
  • AIDS significantly contributes to increased infant, child, and maternal mortality rates.
  • Approximately 9% of Zimbabwe's population is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-positive.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the severe impact of AIDS on Zimbabwe's population.
  • To underscore the projected increase in AIDS-related orphans.
  • To identify the primary mode of HIV transmission.

Main Methods:

  • Epidemiological data analysis.
  • Mortality rate assessment.
  • HIV transmission vector identification.

Main Results:

  • AIDS identified as the foremost cause of adult death in Zimbabwe.
  • Significant rise in infant, child, and maternal mortality linked to AIDS.
  • Projected 600,000 AIDS orphans by the year 2000.
  • Approximately 90% of HIV transmission occurs via heterosexual intercourse.

Conclusions:

  • Urgent public health interventions are required to combat the AIDS epidemic in Zimbabwe.
  • The high rate of heterosexual transmission necessitates targeted prevention strategies.
  • The growing number of orphans demands social support systems.
