Abstract:
Today a pediatrician's credibility cannot be dissociated from his bioethical background, which in turn requires an up-to-date knowledge of infancy and childhood. Communication with the child and his family, an ethical analysis of clinical cases, an awareness of limitations, and the choice of the safest, most effective and appropriate therapies are fundamental elements of pediatric bioethics. Several specific problems such as drug testing, the continuance of therapy regardless of the cost and consequences, and assistance of very premature infants are currently the subject of study and debate.
