    Background:

    • The relationship between auditory and visual stimuli and their impact on perception is complex.
    • Previous research suggested auditory stimuli might entrain or time-lock visual pathways.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate how auditory flutter affects the perceived flicker rate of visual stimuli.
    • To determine the neural mechanisms underlying this cross-modal perceptual influence.

    Main Methods:

    • Participants were presented with simultaneous auditory and visual stimuli at constant physical flicker rates.
    • Changes in the physical rate of auditory flutter were manipulated.
    • Perceptual judgments of visual flicker rate and neural responses (visual evoked potentials) were recorded.

    Main Results:

    • Auditory flutter significantly altered the perceived flicker rate of visual stimuli.
    • This effect, termed auditory 'driving', occurred regardless of stimulus location.
    • Visual evoked potentials did not correlate with the observed perceptual changes.

    Conclusions:

    • The auditory driving effect on visual flicker perception is not mediated by Morrell-type bimodal neurons or spatial correspondence mechanisms.
    • Findings suggest the effect may arise from a modification of subjective perceptual criteria rather than physiological entrainment in the visual pathway.
