Pathology and histochemistry of small cell carcinoma of the prostate

Four cases with small cell carcinoma of the prostate were studied pathologically and histochemically. A diffuse, homogeneous proliferation of small carcinomatous cells which usually replace normal architecture of the gland was the common pathologic feature in all cases. Histochemically, only double silver impregnation of Churukian-Schnenk was intensely positive. The value of early diagnosis in small cell carcinoma of the prostate is discussed, having in view that, virtually, only radical postectomy is an effective treatment.
