Summary

Transvaginal ultrasound aided in diagnosing acute appendicitis by visualizing the inflamed appendix. This imaging technique may offer a new diagnostic sign for appendicitis, especially in cases of right lower quadrant pain.

Background:

Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency often presenting with right lower quadrant abdominal pain.
Diagnostic imaging plays a crucial role in confirming appendicitis and differentiating it from other conditions.
Transvaginal ultrasound is increasingly utilized for pelvic and lower abdominal evaluations.

Observation:

A female patient presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain.
Transvaginal ultrasound was performed to investigate the cause of pain.
The examination revealed characteristic features of acute appendicitis.

Findings:

Direct continuity between the cecal lumen and the appendix was visualized.
The inflamed appendix showed a thickened, edematous wall and intraluminal fluid.
The appendix was noted to be in close proximity to the right ovary.

Implications:

This specific sonographic presentation may represent a novel diagnostic sign for acute appendicitis.
Transvaginal ultrasound offers a valuable, non-invasive method for diagnosing acute appendicitis.
Further research can validate this sonographic sign in a larger patient cohort.
