Peak oxygen consumption (Peak VO2) is the key factor for 3000m race success in young runners. Other variables like ventilatory threshold also correlate with performance, but Peak VO2 shows the strongest association.

Background:

  • In adult distance runners, submaximal oxygen consumption (running economy), peak oxygen consumption (Peak VO2), ventilatory threshold (VT), and fractional utilization (FU) are established predictors of success.

  • Thirteen male, run-trained prepubertal boys (11.7 ± 1.1 years) participated in a 3000m time trial.
  • Laboratory assessments included treadmill running at four submaximal speeds (8, 9.6, 11.2, 12.8 km/h) and a peak oxygen consumption (Peak VO2) test.
  • Data analyzed included mass-relative Peak VO2, VO2 at VT, estimated velocity at VT, fractional utilization (FU), and Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER).

Main Results:

  • Mass-relative Peak VO2 showed a strong negative correlation with 3000m race time (r = -0.83, p < 0.05).
  • Ventilatory threshold (expressed as %Peak VO2, VO2 at VT, and estimated velocity at VT) was also highly correlated with 3000m performance (r = -0.78 to -0.77, p < 0.05).
  • Fractional utilization (FU) and Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER) were significantly associated with race times at higher submaximal speeds (11.2 and 12.8 km/h).

Conclusions:

  • Peak oxygen consumption (Peak VO2) emerged as the single most important physiological factor associated with 3000m race success in this cohort of young runners.
  • Ventilatory threshold parameters also demonstrate significant predictive value for running performance in prepubertal boys.
  • These findings highlight the importance of aerobic capacity in determining distance running performance at a young age.
