Area of Science:

  • Child protection
  • Forensic psychology
  • Pediatric medicine

Background:

  • Preventing child abuse deaths presents significant clinical and methodological challenges.
  • Previous research suggests predicting fatal child maltreatment cases may be impossible.
  • Identifying risk factors remains crucial for effective child protection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify patterns in child maltreatment cases that may indicate a risk of fatality.
  • To provide insights for practitioners to better recognize and intervene in high-risk situations.
  • To contribute to the development of improved child protection strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of a selected group of child maltreatment cases.
  • Examination of case characteristics and professional interventions.
  • Qualitative identification of recurring patterns associated with severe outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Specific patterns were observed in cases of child abuse fatalities.
  • These patterns may serve as indicators for increased risk.
  • The study highlights the complexity of predicting lethal outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • While precise prediction of child abuse fatalities is difficult, identified patterns can enhance practitioner awareness.
  • Further clinical research based on these observations is needed to improve child protection practices.
  • Early identification of risk indicators is essential for preventing child deaths.
