Summary

Diabetic neuropathy involves endoneurial edema, increasing sural nerve hydration. This swelling sequentially impairs nerve function, leading to symptoms and examination findings in peripheral diabetic neuropathy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively define the relationship between peripheral nerve structure (hydration) and function in diabetic neuropathy.
  • To investigate the role of endoneurial edema in the progression of diabetic neuropathy.

Main Methods:

  • Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to measure sural nerve hydration.
  • Neurological function assessed using nerve conduction velocity (NCV-score), neuropathic symptoms (NS-score), and examination signs (NE-score).
