Insights
Internal iliac artery ligation is a surgical technique for controlling bleeding during hysterectomy. Long-term follow-up shows this procedure has no significant distant side effects in patients.
Area of Science:
- Vascular Surgery
- Gynecological Surgery
- Surgical Safety
Context:
- Internal iliac artery ligation is a recognized method for managing intraoperative hemorrhage during gynecological procedures.
- Previous reports indicate the procedure is technically straightforward with minimal early complications.
- The long-term safety profile, particularly regarding distant side effects, requires further investigation.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the distant side effects of internal iliac artery ligation.
- To compare the long-term outcomes of patients who underwent hysterectomy with versus without internal iliac artery ligation.
Summary:
- A cohort of 66 hysterectomized patients was studied, with 23 undergoing internal iliac artery ligation (Group I) and 43 serving as controls (Group II).
- Follow-up ranged from ten months to 2.5 years.
- No significant differences in patient complaints or adverse events were observed between the two groups during the follow-up period.
Impact:
- Internal iliac artery ligation appears to be a safe procedure with no discernible adverse effects in the distant observation period.
- This finding supports the continued use of internal iliac artery ligation for hemorrhage control in hysterectomy.
- Provides evidence for enhanced patient safety in gynecological surgery.
Abstract:
Internal iliac arteries ligation is procedure useful intraoperative haemorrhage control. It was reported as simple and without severe early side effects. The aim of this study is to assess the distant side effects of this procedure. Study group consists of 66 hysterectomized patients. Among them 23 had internal iliac arteries ligation (group I) and 43 hysterectomy without this procedure (group II). The ten month to 2.5 years follow-up does not revealed any differences in complaints of patients from both groups. Thus, internal iliac arteries ligation appeared to have no side effects also in distant observation.
