Lymphatic disruption in varicose vein surgery

    Summary

    Varicose vein surgery can disrupt lymphatic vessels, as shown by lymphangiography in all patients studied. This lymphatic damage is linked to the development of postoperative leg edema.

    Background:

    • Varicose veins are a common condition affecting leg circulation.
    • Postoperative leg edema is a frequent complication after varicose vein surgery.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate lymphatic disruption following varicose vein surgery.
    • To determine if lymphatic damage contributes to postoperative edema.

    Main Methods:

    • Lymphangiography using a modified Kinmonth technique was performed on seven patients.
    • Imaging was conducted before and after standard surgical ablation of primary varicose veins.

    Main Results:

    • All seven patients exhibited significant disruption of lymphatic vessels.
    • Contrast medium extravasation at the calf and thigh levels prevented visualization of groin lymphatics.

    Conclusions:

    • Varicose vein removal leads to lymphatic disruption.
    • Damage to lymphatic vessels contributes to the occurrence of postoperative leg edema.
