Elderly depressed patients show more severe subcortical gray matter hyperintensities on MRI scans. These brain changes are linked to cerebrovascular disease risk and age, not depression onset.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if MRI-detected signal hyperintensities differentiate elderly depressed patients from controls.
  • To explore the association between hyperintensities and clinical variables in geriatric depression.

Main Methods:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were analyzed in 48 elderly patients with depression (DSM-III-R) and 39 normal elderly subjects.
  • Two established rating systems were used to assess periventricular and subcortical signal hyperintensities.

Main Results:

  • Elderly depressed patients exhibited significantly more severe subcortical gray matter hyperintensities compared to controls.
