    Background:

    • Understanding physiological responses to hyperbaric conditions is vital for diver safety.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of simulated dives (8 ATA) on rat platelet kinetics.
    • To determine if decompression affects platelet production and consumption.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized normal and splenectomized male rats, and normal female rats.
    • Measured platelet production and consumption in vivo using 35S and 3H isotopes at 1 hour and 1 day post-dive.

    Main Results:

    • Increased release of new platelets from bone marrow and spleen observed 1 hour post-dive.
    • Splenectomized males showed increased new platelet consumption, maintaining normal platelet counts.
    • Platelet levels decreased by day one due to normalized production and increased old platelet consumption/resorption.

    Conclusions:

    • Decompression stimulates bone marrow platelet production.
    • This stimulation may be an adaptive mechanism to prevent severe thrombocytopenia in professional divers.
    • No evidence of lung platelet trapping was found.
