Summary

Self-reported occupational exposures are convenient but lack accuracy. This study found that while self-assessments had high specificity, their low sensitivity means they are not reliable for most community-based occupational health studies.

Background:

  • Self-reporting checklists offer a cost-effective method for gathering occupational exposure data.
  • However, the accuracy and validity of self-reported occupational exposures have not been thoroughly evaluated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the validity of self-reported occupational exposures by comparing them with expert assessments.
  • To provide evidence on the reliability of self-assessment for occupational exposures.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 1,910 males in Montreal (1979-1985) was used.
  • Self-reported exposures to 11 substances were compared against expert evaluations by industrial hygienists and chemists.
  • Statistical analysis included kappa statistics, sensitivity, and specificity.
