Background:

Observation:

  • A 21-year-old atopic factory worker developed allergic asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis after 5 months of occupational exposure to senna in hair dye manufacturing.
  • The patient showed a strong positive reaction during a bronchial challenge test with senna.

Findings:

  • Skin prick test revealed a 12-mm wheal.
  • Radioallergosorbent test (RAST) for senna was highly positive (class 4), with no cross-reactivity to pollens or foods.
  • SDS-PAGE and IgE immunoblotting identified specific senna protein bands recognized by the patient's IgE antibodies.

Implications:

  • This case highlights senna as a potential occupational allergen in the cosmetic industry.
  • Prompt job modification led to complete symptom resolution, underscoring the importance of allergen avoidance.
