Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Surgical Instrumentation

Background:

  • The internal mammary artery is crucial for coronary artery bypass grafting.
  • Adequate visualization of the retrosternal space is essential for safe dissection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe a new sternal retractor designed for enhanced visualization.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of this retractor in clinical practice.

Main Methods:

  • A novel sternal retractor was designed and implemented.
  • The retractor was used for all internal mammary artery dissections over a six-month period.

Main Results:

  • The retractor provided easy visualization of the internal mammary artery and retrosternal area.
  • No sternal fractures occurred.
  • No costochondral fractures were observed.

Conclusions:

  • The described sternal retractor facilitates improved surgical visualization.
  • This retractor is a safe and effective tool for internal mammary artery dissections, preventing fractures.
