Abstract:
The automatic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (AICD) is a life-saving device for people who suffer from lethal ventricular dysrhythmias. Because the AICD is being encountered more frequently by home care providers who see patients with cardiac or other diagnoses, knowing how to assess the effect of the AICD on patients is critical. The functions of the AICD, its impact on patients and family, and the implications for the home care nurse are discussed.
