Summary

Long-term perceptual priming occurred in a patient with transient global amnesia (TGA). This demonstrates implicit memory capacity even during acute memory loss episodes.

Background:

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by a temporary inability to form new memories.
The extent of implicit memory function during acute TGA episodes remains largely unexplored.

Observation:

A patient with TGA underwent perceptual identification testing during an amnesic episode and again one week later.
The patient was exposed to fragmented pictures during the TGA episode.

Findings:

Seven days post-episode, the patient showed significantly better recognition of previously seen fragmented pictures compared to novel ones.
This performance occurred despite the patient having no explicit memory of the initial picture exposure during the TGA episode.
Control subjects performed similarly on both old and new pictures, highlighting the specificity of the priming effect in the TGA patient.

Implications:

This study provides the first evidence of preserved long-term perceptual priming during an acute TGA episode.
Findings suggest that implicit memory systems remain functional even when explicit memory is severely impaired.
Results extend the understanding of implicit memory phenomena beyond chronic amnesia to acute memory disorders.
