Background:

  • Sumatriptan is a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT1D)-receptor agonist used for acute migraine treatment.
  • Its in vivo vasoactive effects on human dural vessels remain controversial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the vasoconstrictive effects of sumatriptan on human dural vessels.
  • To assess these effects following both subcutaneous and intra-arterial administration.

Main Methods:

  • Interventional angiography and intravascular Doppler ultrasonography were used.
  • Sumatriptan was administered via subcutaneous injection (6 mg) or directly into the middle meningeal artery (MMA) (2 mg) in nine patients.
  • Patients included those with normal MMA, dural arteriovenous fistulas (AVF), and brain arteriovenous malformations (AVM).
