Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Cardiology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic used for schizophrenia.
  • Cardiac complications are a known, though rare, side effect of clozapine.

Observation:

  • A patient with schizophrenia developed cardiomyopathy during clozapine treatment.
  • Symptoms included dyspnea, malaise, and edema with reduced ejection fraction.

Findings:

  • This case demonstrates clozapine-induced symptomatic cardiomyopathy.
  • Review of literature indicates cardiorespiratory complications are rare but possible.

Implications:

  • Caution is advised when using clozapine in patients with cardiac disease.
  • Concurrent use of benzodiazepines may increase risk.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Regular cardiac monitoring is crucial for patients on clozapine.
