Methods and findings in experimental and clinical pharmacology·2008

Area of Science:

  • Surgical innovation
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Pregnancy presents unique challenges for surgical decision-making, particularly for conditions like biliary colic.
  • Conservative management of biliary colic during pregnancy may not always be effective.

Observation:

  • A case of a 26-year-old pregnant woman with symptomatic gallstones was reported.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was successfully performed during the second trimester.

Findings:

  • The laparoscopic cholecystectomy proceeded without complications.
  • The pregnancy course remained unaffected by the surgical intervention.

Implications:

  • This case supports the expanding safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in pregnant patients.
  • Pregnancy is increasingly recognized as not being an absolute contraindication for this procedure.
