Effects of mediastinal irradiation on oesophageal function

Mediastinal irradiation for thoracic cancers commonly causes esophageal symptoms like pain or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms are not due to changes in esophageal function but likely result from increased mucosal sensitivity.
