Photophobia, or light sensitivity, can occur with lithium treatment even at non-toxic levels. This side effect repeatedly emerged when lithium was reintroduced in a patient, challenging previous understandings of lithium toxicity.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Pharmacology
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Lithium is a widely prescribed mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder.
  • Photophobia is a known but rare side effect associated with lithium intoxication.
  • The occurrence of photophobia at non-toxic lithium levels is not well-documented.

Observation:

  • A 45-year-old woman developed significant photophobia after six months of lithium therapy.
  • The photophobia resolved upon discontinuation of lithium.
  • Upon reintroduction of lithium, the photophobia recurred within days on two separate occasions.

Findings:

  • This case suggests that photophobia can be a side effect of lithium at therapeutic, non-toxic concentrations.
  • The recurrent nature of the symptom upon lithium reintroduction strongly implicates the medication.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Clinicians should consider photophobia as a potential adverse effect of lithium, even in the absence of toxic levels.
  • This finding may broaden the differential diagnosis for photophobia in patients on mood stabilizers.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the mechanism underlying lithium-induced photophobia at non-toxic levels.
