Background:

  • Intra-orbital hydatid cysts are uncommon expansive processes.
  • This retrospective study evaluates ten cases operated between January 1985 and December 1991.

Observation:

  • The mean patient age was 25 years (5 women, 5 men).
  • Primary symptoms included progressive unilateral exophthalmia (8 cases) and acute exophthalmia (2 cases).
  • Visual deterioration occurred in 7 cases, with 6 experiencing reduced visual acuity and 1 becoming blind. Papillary edema and optic atrophy were noted on fundus examination. Ocular motility disturbances were observed in 5 cases.

Findings:

  • Computed Tomography (CT) scans accurately diagnosed the condition and predicted its hydatid nature in 9 out of 10 cases.
  • A fronto-orbital approach was utilized in 9 cases, enabling complete cyst removal without rupture.
