Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Virology
  • Neonatology

Background:

  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections can cause severe central nervous system (CNS) disease in newborns.
  • Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes in neonatal HSV CNS infections.

Observation:

  • A case of a newborn presenting with a localized central nervous system herpes simplex infection is detailed.
  • Clinical manifestations observed in the patient are described.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis was initially suspected based on clinical presentation.
  • Confirmation was achieved through viral isolation via tissue culture.
  • Herpes simplex glycoprotein B DNA was detected in cerebrospinal fluid using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering HSV CNS infection in neonates.
  • Understanding the pathogenesis, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of neonatal HSV infections is critical.
  • Effective management strategies can potentially mitigate severe neurological sequelae.
