Summary

Proximal tibial osteotomy showed functional decline post-surgery in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Despite this, 82% of patients were satisfied and would repeat the procedure for unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine

Background:

  • Unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis affects a significant patient population.
  • Proximal tibial osteotomy is a surgical option for knee osteoarthritis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the functional outcomes of proximal tibial osteotomy in patients with unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis.
  • To assess patient satisfaction following the procedure.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 34 men (37 knees) who underwent proximal tibial osteotomy.
  • Functional outcomes assessed using the Tegner and Lysholm system (0-10 scale).
  • Average patient age was 49 years.

Main Results:

  • Average preoperative functional score was 5.4, decreasing to 4.8 postoperatively.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Postoperative participation in high-impact activities like running and jumping was noted.
  • 82% of patients reported satisfaction and willingness to undergo the surgery again.
  • Conclusions:

    • Proximal tibial osteotomy may not significantly improve functional scores in the long term for this patient group.
    • Despite functional score changes, a high level of patient satisfaction exists.
    • The procedure allows return to activities that could potentially damage total knee arthroplasty components.
