Ventilation decreases early in sleep with minimal airway resistance increase. Later, ventilation is maintained despite significant increases in upper airway resistance, suggesting compensatory mechanisms.

Background:

  • Ventilation (V) decreases during sleep, while upper airway resistance (UAR) increases.
  • Previous studies suggest a reciprocal relationship between V and UAR, but its progression during sleep is unclear.

  • To investigate the progressive changes in V and UAR throughout a non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep period.
  • To compare these changes between healthy individuals who achieve slow-wave sleep (SWS) and those who do not.
