Pineal epidermoid cyst: its surgical therapy

Background:

Pineal region tumors present diagnostic challenges.
Epidermoid cysts in the pineal region are uncommon.
Initial misdiagnosis can delay appropriate treatment.

Observation:

A patient initially diagnosed with a pinealoma presented with a pineal epidermoid cyst.
The lesion remained undiagnosed for seven years.
Combined computerized axial tomography and carotid-vertebral angiography were utilized for diagnosis.

Findings:

Advanced imaging accurately delineated the cyst's location.
The imaging findings suggested a histologically benign lesion.
Successful intracapsular resection was achieved using microsurgery.

Implications:

Accurate and timely diagnosis of pineal region lesions is crucial.
Advanced imaging techniques improve diagnostic accuracy.
Microsurgical approaches offer effective treatment for pineal epidermoid cysts.
