Summary

Parental reports of wheeze and asthma symptoms accurately predict exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in children. This supports using the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire for assessing childhood asthma.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the correlation between parental responses to core International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questions and objective measures of exercise-induced bronchial hyperresponsiveness (EIBH) in 7-year-old children.
  • To assess the utility of exercise challenge testing as a diagnostic tool for current asthma and exercise-induced wheeze.

  • A cross-sectional study involving 191 children aged 7 years from Southern Tasmania.

    • Parental responses to ISAAC questionnaire items regarding respiratory symptoms align well with objective measurements of exercise-induced respiratory responses in young children.
    • These findings validate the use of parental ISAAC questionnaire data for interpreting asthma prevalence in population-based studies.
    • Exercise challenge testing serves as a reliable indicator for diagnosing EIB and current asthma in pediatric populations.
