Missing intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) require investigation. In rare cases, IUDs can perforate the uterus and migrate to the pelvis, necessitating prompt medical evaluation and management.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Gynecological Surgery
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) are common reversible contraceptives.
  • Stringless IUDs or those with retracted strings pose diagnostic challenges.
  • Uterine perforation is a rare but serious complication of IUD insertion.

Observation:

  • A case of a 36-year-old woman presenting with infertility is described.
  • Two intrauterine contraceptive devices were found to have perforated the uterus and migrated to the pelvic cavity.
  • The devices were located outside the uterine cavity, within the pelvis.

Findings:

  • Failure to locate IUD strings necessitates thorough investigation.
  • Uterine perforation by an IUD can lead to extrauterine migration.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Pelvic location of migrated IUDs can be associated with infertility.
  • Implications:

    • Every instance of a missing IUD string warrants comprehensive evaluation.
    • Diagnostic imaging is crucial for identifying perforated and migrated IUDs.
    • A management algorithm for missing IUDs is proposed to ensure patient safety and optimal care.
