Summary

Heated mustard compresses, used as a naturopathic remedy, can cause severe burns. This case study highlights the risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring from such treatments.

Background:

Naturopathic remedies are increasingly explored for common ailments.
Heated mustard compresses are a traditional remedy.
Patient presented with a burn after using this remedy for pneumonia.

Observation:

A second-degree, partial-thickness burn on the midchest and medial breast.
The burn resulted from a heated mustard compress application.
Hyperpigmentation and hypertrophic scarring were noted.

Findings:

Heated mustard compresses pose a significant risk of thermal injury.
The burn exhibited characteristics of a partial-thickness burn.
Delayed sequelae included hyperpigmentation and hypertrophic scarring.
