Unusual jaw cysts, difficult to classify, may recur after treatment. We propose the term "polymorphous odontogenic cyst" for these unique lesions.

Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Odontogenic cysts
  • Surgical pathology

Background:

  • Sporadic reports describe unusual jaw cysts lacking clear classification.
  • Previous diagnoses include median-mandibular, glandular, sialo-odontogenic, or botryoid odontogenic cysts.

Observation:

  • Five cases of odontogenic cysts not fitting conventional categories are presented.
  • Two of these cysts recurred shortly after conservative treatment.

Findings:

  • The study proposes the term "polymorphous odontogenic cyst" for these lesions.
  • This term reflects their varied histological appearances.
  • Distinguishing these from other cysts with mucous and papillary epithelial formations is discussed.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for regrowth in these unusual jaw cysts.
  • Accurate classification and diagnosis are crucial for effective management.
  • Further research may clarify the etiology and behavior of polymorphous odontogenic cysts.
