    Summary

Rubella vaccine HPV77DE5 provided sustained antibody titres in most girls four years post-immunization. Reinfection rates were low, and rubella reinfection during pregnancy poses no known risk to the unborn child.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Vaccinology
    • Virology

    Context:

    • Rubella vaccination is crucial for preventing congenital rubella syndrome.
    • Long-term immunity following rubella vaccination requires evaluation.
    • The HPV77DE5 rubella vaccine strain was used in this cohort.

    Purpose:

    • To assess the durability of rubella antibody titres four years after HPV77DE5 vaccination.
    • To determine the rate of serological response waning or boosting.
    • To evaluate the potential impact of rubella wild virus reinfection.

    Summary:

    • Antibody titres were measured in 158 girls previously seronegative and vaccinated in 1971.
    • In 1975, 87% maintained unchanged titres, while 3.2% showed a decrease.
    • A titre increase was observed in 9.5%, potentially linked to reinfection (<1% annually), with no risk to pregnancy.

    Impact:

    • Demonstrates the long-term immunogenicity of the HPV77DE5 rubella vaccine.
    • Provides data on rubella reinfection rates in a vaccinated population.
    • Reassures that rubella reinfection post-vaccination does not endanger pregnancy.
