Summary

Glaucoma impacts both color vision and luminance perception, with vision deficits worsening as the disease progresses. Pigmentary glaucoma patients showed less impairment in red-green color discrimination.

Background:

  • Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy affecting millions worldwide.
  • Visual field loss is a hallmark of glaucoma, but early visual processing deficits are also suspected.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and glaucoma suspects on color vision and luminance perception.
  • To compare visual system deficits across different glaucoma stages and subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Discrimination thresholds were measured along red-green (RG), yellow-blue (YV), and luminance (LD) axes.
  • Data collected from 27 OAG patients, 13 glaucoma suspects, and a subgroup analysis of pigmentary glaucoma patients.
  • A two-alternative forced-choice experiment was used for further investigation in specific patient groups.
