Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hand and Wrist Surgery

Background:

  • Wrist arthrodesis is a surgical procedure to fuse the wrist joint.
  • Dynamic compression plating and bone grafting are techniques used in wrist fusion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of wrist arthrodesis using dynamic compression plating and bone grafting.
  • To assess patient outcomes, including pain relief, satisfaction, grip strength, and complications.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 18 consecutive wrist arthrodesis procedures in 17 patients.
  • Standardized surgical technique with dynamic compression plating and bone grafting.
  • Mean follow-up of 48 months.

Main Results:

  • Significant pain relief and high patient satisfaction reported in 17 out of 18 patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Limited grip strength compared to the unoperated wrist.
  • Low complication rate, including one case of reflex sympathetic dystrophy and minor donor site issues.
  • Conclusions:

    • Wrist arthrodesis with dynamic compression plating and bone grafting is an effective procedure for pain relief and patient satisfaction.
    • Functional outcomes like grip strength may remain limited post-surgery.
    • The technique demonstrates a favorable safety profile with minimal complications.
