Summary

Aerobic fitness, measured by cycle ergometry and a 2-mile run, did not predict successful completion of U.S. Air Force basic military training (BMT). Initial fitness levels showed no significant association with timely BMT graduation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between initial aerobic fitness and successful completion of U.S. Air Force BMT.

  • One hundred U.S. Air Force recruits underwent cycle ergometry testing for estimated oxygen consumption (vO2) and a 2-mile run.
  • Participants were tracked to determine if they completed BMT on schedule.
  • Statistical analyses included comparisons of mean vO2 and run times, relative risk, and chi-square calculations.
