Summary

Ocular cysticercosis, an eye infection caused by tapeworm larvae, leads to severe damage. Steroid treatment in rabbits significantly reduced inflammation and eye injury, suggesting inflammation drives disease progression.

Background:

  • Cysticercosis frequently affects the eye, with posterior segment involvement causing severe vision loss.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of ocular cysticercosis.
  • To evaluate the effect of corticosteroids on ocular inflammation and damage in an experimental model.

Main Methods:

  • New Zealand rabbits were used, divided into two groups.
  • Group I rabbits received intravitreous inoculation of a single Taenia crassiceps cysticercus.

    • The developed rabbit model effectively mimics human ocular cysticercosis and is suitable for further research.
