    Summary

    Actinomyces odontolyticus, a bacterium, caused a rare soft tissue infection in the malar region. This case highlights a new cause of actinomycosis, a granulomatous infection.

    Long COVID syndrome and the lung: how long will it last?

    Background:

    • Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection typically caused by anaerobic bacteria.
    • Actinomyces species are known pathogens, but Actinomyces odontolyticus is rarely implicated in human infections.

    Observation:

    • A soft tissue mass in the malar region was found to be caused by Actinomyces odontolyticus.
    • Histological examination revealed granulomatous inflammation with structures resembling sulfur granules.

    Findings:

    • This study reports the first documented case of actinomycosis caused by Actinomyces odontolyticus.
    • The identification was confirmed through morphological, cultural, and biochemical analyses.

    Implications:

    • This finding expands the spectrum of Actinomyces species capable of causing human actinomycosis.
    • Clinicians should consider Actinomyces odontolyticus in the differential diagnosis of granulomatous soft tissue infections, particularly in the head and neck region.
