Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...

Protection of Alcohols

This lesson delves into the concept of protection and deprotection of a functional group fundamental to synthetic organic chemistry. These phenomena are explained in the context of aliphatic and aromatic alcohols.
Protection
It defines a protecting group as the masking agent to make the more reactive species inert to a given set of conditions. This concept is depicted via the illustration of liquid flow through different outlets in an assembly of pipes. The analogy helps to understand the role...
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Summary

A tenth-grade alcohol misuse prevention program improved knowledge and reduced alcohol misuse and risky behaviors. However, boys showed steeper increases in alcohol use and misuse than girls, indicating a need for targeted interventions.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Substance Abuse Prevention

Background:

  • High school students exhibit significant alcohol use and misuse.
  • Effective prevention strategies are crucial for adolescent well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop, implement, and evaluate a tenth-grade alcohol misuse prevention curriculum.
  • To assess the curriculum's impact on knowledge, behaviors, and refusal skills.

Main Methods:

  • A curriculum focused on social pressures, alcohol effects, and risks was delivered to 1041 tenth-grade students across four school districts.
  • Outcomes were evaluated through twelfth grade, comparing tenth-grade only exposure with combined sixth and tenth-grade exposure.

Main Results:

  • The curriculum significantly improved alcohol misuse prevention knowledge (p < 0.001) and reduced alcohol misuse (p < 0.02).
  • Refusal skills showed a positive trend (p < 0.09).
  • Boys exhibited greater increases in alcohol use, misuse, and drinking and driving compared to girls. Prior sixth-grade exposure did not enhance outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • A tenth-grade alcohol misuse prevention curriculum can yield positive effects on knowledge and behavior.
  • Targeted interventions are necessary, particularly for boys, due to their escalating rates of alcohol use and misuse.
  • Creative approaches are needed to address gender-specific trends in adolescent alcohol consumption.
