Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Cervical polyps are common, but exceptionally large ones are rarely documented.
  • Giant cervical polyps pose unique clinical challenges due to their size and potential for complications.

Observation:

  • A case report details a giant cervical polyp measuring 17 x 10 x 5 cm.
  • The polyp presented protruding through the vaginal introitus in a 27-year-old, sexually inactive woman.

Findings:

  • Malignant degeneration was not observed in the six previously reported cases of giant cervical polyps.
  • Carcinomatous change, while occurring in a small percentage (1.7%) of cervical polyps, was absent in this large specimen.

Implications:

  • The findings suggest that routine pre-excision biopsy may not be essential for giant cervical polyps.
