Summary

Topical anesthesia is a safe alternative to injection anesthesia for cataract surgery. This study found comparable patient satisfaction and visual outcomes, with no significant increase in complications for topical anesthesia.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy and patient acceptance of topical anesthesia versus peribulbar anesthesia in cataract surgery.
  • To evaluate the impact of akinesia (lack of eye movement) on surgical outcomes and complications.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study comparing two groups of 27 patients undergoing cataract surgery.
  • Group 1 received topical anesthesia only; Group 2 received peribulbar injection anesthesia.
  • Exclusion criteria included deafness, dementia, and severe anxiety.
