Summary

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) effectively identifies common bile duct (CBD) stones preoperatively. For complex CBD stones, open surgery is recommended if endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) fails for stone extraction.

Background:

  • Choledocholithiasis, or common bile duct (CBD) stones, is a common complication of cholelithiasis.
  • Preoperative diagnosis and management of CBD stones are crucial for successful cholecystectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of preoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for common bile duct (CBD) stones.
  • To assess the efficacy of endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES) and surgical interventions for CBD stone removal in patients undergoing cholecystectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 139 patients who underwent cholecystectomy between 1992 and 1994.
  • Preoperative ERCP was performed in 27 patients with suspected CBD stones.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), ES, and open CBD exploration were utilized for stone management.
