Light curtails sleep in anesthetized hornets: extraretinal light perception

Summary

Light exposure significantly shortens the sleep duration of anesthetized hornets (Vespa orientalis). Near ultraviolet (U.V.) light is most effective in waking the insects, suggesting extraretinal light perception.
