Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • A 45-year-old male with a history of cyclophosphamide exposure presented with positive urine cytology.
  • The patient had undergone prior resection of a Grade 2 papillary transitional-cell carcinoma of the bladder.

Observation:

  • Repeated ureteroscopy was performed due to persistent positive urine cytology findings.
  • An unusual complication of intussusception occurred in the left ureter during the procedure.

Findings:

  • The retrograde ureteral intussusception is a novel complication attributed to ureteroscopy.
  • Surgical repair involved resection of the affected ureter and reconstruction using a Boari flap.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a previously undocumented risk associated with ureteroscopy.
  • Awareness of this potential complication is crucial for urologists performing similar procedures.
  • The successful management with a Boari flap demonstrates a viable reconstructive option.
