Summary

Methanol extracts from Cordyceps sinensis fruiting bodies suppressed immune responses. Specific fractions inhibited lymphoproliferation, natural killer (NK) cell activity, and cytokine production in human mononuclear cells (HMNC).

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Pharmacology
  • Natural Products Chemistry

Background:

  • Cordyceps sinensis is a traditional medicinal mushroom.
  • Its immunomodulatory effects require further investigation.
  • Understanding specific active components is crucial for therapeutic applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the immunomodulatory effects of Cordyceps sinensis methanol extract fractions.
  • To determine the impact on human mononuclear cells (HMNC) immune functions.
  • To identify fractions with immunosuppressive properties.

Main Methods:

  • Fractionation of Cordyceps sinensis methanol extract.
  • Assay of lymphoproliferative response and natural killer (NK) cell activity in HMNC.
  • Measurement of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) production stimulated by phytohemagglutinin (PHA).

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Two fractions, CS-36-39 and CS-48-51, significantly inhibited HMNC blastogenesis.
  • These fractions also suppressed NK cell activity and PHA-stimulated IL-2 production.
  • Both fractions effectively blocked TNF-alpha production without exhibiting cytotoxicity to HMNC.

Conclusions:

  • Cordyceps sinensis contains immunosuppressive ingredients.
  • Specific fractions (CS-36-39 and CS-48-51) demonstrate significant immunomodulatory activity.
  • These findings support the potential of Cordyceps sinensis in modulating immune responses.
