Bacterial meningitis is a rare complication following spinal surgery, occurring in 0.18% of cases. Early diagnosis and prompt management are crucial for a good outcome in patients with this serious infection.

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Meningitis is a recognized but infrequently reported complication of spinal surgery.
  • Previous literature lacks comprehensive case series and frequency estimates for post-spinal surgery meningitis.

Observation:

  • A retrospective review identified bacterial meningitis in 4 out of 2180 spinal surgery cases over 3 years.
  • The incidence of bacterial meningitis post-spinal surgery was determined to be 0.18%.

Findings:

  • All four identified patients diagnosed with bacterial meningitis following spinal surgery survived.
  • Clinical and laboratory features of this complication were identified.

Implications:

  • This study highlights the rarity of bacterial meningitis after spinal surgery.
